| The first video tapes were open reel to reel (not in a cassette). Ampex produced the the popular 2 inch Quadruplex in mid-1950's and then in the late 60's & early 70's 1/2 inch EIAJ, 1 inch Type "C" and the first popular cassette the 3/4 inch U-Matic came on to the market.
